[Apparently ‹ modern Greek (Cyprus) halloumin, challoumin (‹ Egyptian Arabic ḥalūm a kind of cheese + modern Greek (Cyprus) -in, regional variant of modern Greek -i, suffix added to words of foreign origin ending in a consonant), with alteration of the suffix after its equivalent in standard modern Greek.]
A mild, firm, white Cypriot cheese made from goats' or ewes' milk, usually eaten grilled or otherwise cooked. More fully halloumi cheese.
The form in quot. 1960 prob. represents a transcription error.
