[ad. L. gymnic-us, a. Gr. γυµνικ-ός pertaining to bodily exercises, f. γυµνός naked: see -ic. Freq. in the 17th c., when gymnastic had not yet a recognized standing. Cf. F. gymnique (1542 in Hatz.-Darm.).]
