Large and empty or hollow; ‘dreary in consequence of extent or emptiness, waste, desolate’; also of sound, such as ‘is emitted from a place that is empty or hollow’ (Jam.).
Sometimes influenced in sense by association with gust (of wind), and, in later use, with ghostly.
