[a. mod. Irish gaimbín; according to Stokes (in Fick Vergl. Wb. II. 79) repr. a derivative of OCeltic *km̥bion, whence med.L. cambium: see change.]
Usury. Chiefly attrib., as gombeen-man, a money-lender, usurer; so also gombeen-woman. Hence gomˈbeenism, the practice of borrowing or lending at usury.
