[f. glycerine) + -ol; the original intention of the name being to designate a substance intermediate in composition between ‘glycerine’ and ‘alcohol’.]
a. Formerly applied to the compound now called ethyl glycol or ethylene alcohol C2H4(OH)2, a sweetish, colourless, inodorous viscid liquid obtained from the decomposition of ethylene dibromide.
b. In wider sense, a general name for the group of fatty diatomic alcohols of which this is the type, having the general structure CnH2n(OH)2.
