[Commonly explained as a humorous formation on gaze v., imitating Lat. futures like videbo ‘I shall see’ (cf. lavabo); but the early quots. suggest that it may possibly be a corruption of some oriental word.]
1. A turret or lantern on the roof of a house, usually for the purpose of commanding an extensive prospect; also, a similar erection in a garden or pleasure ground; a belvedere or look-out.
