1) 说“我是约翰的好朋友。”可以是 I'm a good friend of John. 或是 I'm a great friend of John. 这里的 great 没有“伟大”的意思。

2) 涉及两个人的相互动作，有关的名词往往要用复数而不是单数。

• He became friends with my brother.他同我弟弟交上了朋友。
• He was not friends with his political colleagues.他同他的政治伙伴没有朋友关系。

如果 friends 前面有形容词，通常这种特殊的复数用法就不可以使用，而要恢复 He is a ... friend of... 的正常用法。但是有少数几个形容词可以直接放在复数 friends 前面，就是最常用的 good 和 great。

• I'm childhood friends with John.我是约翰小时候的朋友。
• I'm family friends with John.我同约翰是世交。

另外，除了 good 与 great，还有一两个刻画友情的形容词，偶尔也用于 friends 的复数形式。

• I'm bosom friends with John.我是约翰的知心朋友。
• I'm genuine friends with John.我是约翰的真正朋友。

但这种用法不大自然。

与 friends 相类似，涉及两件同类事物的动作时，表示该事物的名词也常常用复数。

• to shake hands with somebody同某人握手
• to change trains换乘火车
• to change shirts换衬衣
• One out of five respondents said he had switched religions as an adult.应答者每五个人就有一个说他成年后转换过宗教信仰。
• Shifts changed at four o'clock.四点钟换了班。

经过发展，即使没有 with... 在后面，friend 也可以用复数。

• He will never be friends again.同他再也没法做朋友了。
