[a. mod.L. Euglena, (C. G. Ehrenberg 1830, in Ann. d. Physik u. Chem. XCIV. 507), f. eu- + Gr. γλήνη pupil of the eye.]
A single-celled aquatic flagellate of the genus Euglena, which is treated as either a protozoan or an alga. Cf. euglenoid a. and n.

II. 553 Of these the Euglenæ are a very abundant form, occurring frequently in such numbers in stagnant waters, as to give these a green or red colour. 1906[see euglenoid a.]. 1955New Biol.
