[Gr. ἐπίκλησις, f. ἐπικαλεῖν to call upon, invoke.]
A part of the prayer of consecration in which the presence of the Holy Spirit is invoked to bless the eucharistic elements, or the communicants, or both.
[1832W. Palmer Orig. Liturg. II. 134 The immediate or proper prayer of consecration..may be divided into two particulars: first, the prayer itself, or ἐπίκλησις, in the language of the primitive church; and secondly, the commemoration of our Lord's deeds and words at the last supper.] 1878Encycl. Brit. VIII. 653/2 In Quæstio 107 it is laid down that immediately on the pronunciation of the Epiclesis, transubstantiation takes place. 1912[see anamnesis b]. 1925Contemp. Rev.
