a. Antiq. In Poetry, a refrain, a short colon subjoined to a strophe.
b. In some Eastern Churches, a refrain to a hymn; an antiphonal refrain.
[1853H. Burgess Sel. Metr. Hymns & Homilies of Ephraem Syrus p. liv, These ἐϕύµνια, or supernumerary verses, have a pleasing effect.]1910Encycl. Brit.
