[a. F. dorée ‘the Doree, or Saint Peters fish; also (though not so properly) the Goldfish or Goldenie’ (Cotgr.); in origin, fem. pa. pple. of dorer to gild.]
A fish, Zeus faber, found in European seas, and much esteemed as food. Also called John Dory, q.v.
