1. A name given to various small sharks of the families Squalidæ (Spinacidæ), Galeorhinidæ (Carchariidæ), and Scylliidæ, or to the sharks of these families collectively; esp. in Great Britain, the Large and Small Spotted Dogfish (Scyllium catulus, S. canicula), and in New England, the Picked Dogfish (Squalus acanthias).
