1. Gr. and Rom. Antiq. A disc of metal or heavy material used in ancient Grecian and Roman athletic exercises; a quoit. Also, ellipt., the game of hurling the discus.
1656Cowley Pindaric Odes, Praise Pindar iii. note, The chief Exercises there were Running, Leaping, Wrestling, the Discus, which was the casting of a great round Stone, or Ball, made of Iron or Brass. 1725Pope Odyss. viii. 137 From Elatreus' strong arm the Discus flies. 1892P.
