a. Any organic compound containing two double bonds between carbon atoms.

b. attrib., esp. in diene synthesis, an addition reaction in which two carbon atoms joined by a double or triple bond in an unsaturated compound become attached to the first and fourth carbon atoms of a conjugated diene, forming a ring of six carbon atoms in the resulting molecule; the Diels-Alder reaction; diene value, a number expressing the degree of unsaturation in fatty compounds.
