[a. Hindī dē'odār, dēwdār:—Skr. deva-dāra divine tree, tree or timber of the gods. (The name occurs already in Avicenna c 1030 as diūdār. It is given in various parts of India to other trees besides this with which it has come into Europe.)]
A sub-species of cedar (Cedrus Libani, var. Deodara), a large tree closely allied to the cedar of Lebanon, found native in the Western Himālayas from Nepāl to Afghanistan, and now largely grown as an ornamental tree in England. The wood is of extreme durability.
