[f. L. dēfix-, ppl. stem of dēfīgĕre to fasten down, f. de- I. 1 + fīgĕre to fix, fasten. The early example of the pa. pple. appears to have been formed immed. after L. defix-us, with Eng. ppl. suffix.]
