A liquid unsaturated cyclic hydrocarbon, C5H6, that is formed as a by-product of the cracking of petroleum, readily reacts to produce a solid dimer, and is used in the manufacture of synthetic resins and in organic syntheses. Also: a substituted derivative of this compound.
Cf. cyclopentadienyl n. Unlike the cyclopentadienyl anion, the cyclopentadiene molecule is non-planar and not aromatic.
