[f. med.L. clāvellāt-us (cineres clavellati, clavati, Du Cange), OF. clavelée, in cendre clavelée, mod.F. cendre gravelée, lit. ‘granulated ashes’, which Littré takes as the proper form: but on phonetic grounds this is doubtful.] 1. in clavellated ashes: ‘Potash of superior quality obtained from the dried and calcined lees of wine, for the use of dyers’ (Godefroy).
