[a. F. catadoupe, catadupe, ad. L. catadūpa (pl.), ad. Gr. κατάδουποι (pl.) the cataracts of the Nile, f. κατά down + δοῦπος thud, heavy sound of falling, δουπέ-ειν to sound heavy, fall with a thud. (But see Liddell and Scott.)]
1. A cataract or waterfall, orig. those of the Nile.
