The name of Stanislao Cannizzaro (1826–1910), Italian chemist, used attrib. or in the possessive of a reaction of aldehydes with caustic alkali (see quot. 1964).

When aldehydes containing no hydrogen atoms on the α-carbon atom (adjacent to the functional group) are treated in the cold with concentrated aqueous or alcoholic sodium hydroxide, a dismutation involving two molecules takes place. One molecule is reduced to the alcohol, while the other is oxidized to a salt of the corresponding carboxylic acid.
