When aldehydes containing no hydrogen atoms on the α-carbon atom (adjacent to the functional group) are treated in the cold with concentrated aqueous or alcoholic sodium hydroxide, a dismutation involving two molecules takes place. One molecule is reduced to the alcohol, while the other is oxidized to a salt of the corresponding carboxylic acid. |
