A chronic disease of the lungs caused by the inhalation of fine particles of textile fibres, esp. cotton dust, over a long period.
1881Jrnl. Anat. & Physiol. XV. 395 Other forms, such as byssinosis (or the disease produced by the inhalation of cotton fibre) do not differ from the ordinary forms of phthisis. 1890Billings Med. Dict.
