The removing of burs and other foreign bodies from wool or cotton in the process of manufacture. Hence burring-machine, burring-saw, burring-wheel. burring rollers pl., an apparatus for removing the burrs from wool in preparing it for carding.
1879in Cassell's Techn. Educ. IV. 340/1 To clean the wool of these troublesome seeds, the burring machine was brought into requisition. 1884W. S. B. Maclaren Spinning v. 83 The burrs..lie along the fibres of wool... To clear them off, burring rollers are fixed on the top of two of the lickers-in. 1888Encycl. Brit. XXIV. 658 The swift as it travels round is met by a series of three burring rollers rotating in an opposite direction.
