burning bush a. ‘The bush that burned and was not consumed’ mentioned in Exod. iii., and assumed as an ensign by the Presbyterian churches of Scotland, in memory of the persecution of the 17th c. b. A name applied to various shrubs or plants, as the Artillery plant, Pilea Serpylliflora, the Dictamnus Fraxinella, and (U.S.) the Euonymus atropurpureus and E. Americanus.
