bufotenine Biochem. and Pharm.|bjuːfəʊˈtɛniːn, -ɪn| Also -in. [ad. F. bufoténine (Phisalix & Bertrand 1902, in Compt. Rend. 7 July 48), f. L. būfo toad + ten- (perh. repr. L. ten-āx holding fast (f. ten-ēre to hold, cf. F. tenir), in allusion to its ‘paralysing influence’) + -ine5.] A hallucinogenic tryptamine alkaloid that produces vasoconstriction and hypertension when injected and is present in various amphibia (esp. toads), mushrooms, and tropical shrubs.
1902Jrnl. Chem. Soc. LXXXII. ii. 576 The toxic action [of the venom of the common toad] is due to two principal substances; one..is of resinoid nature... The other, termed bufotenin, is very soluble in both water and alcohol; it has a paralysing influence. 1936Jrnl. Biol. Chem.
