A hallucinogenic tryptamine alkaloid that produces vasoconstriction and hypertension when injected and is present in various amphibia (esp. toads), mushrooms, and tropical shrubs.
1902Jrnl. Chem. Soc. LXXXII. ii. 576 The toxic action [of the venom of the common toad] is due to two principal substances; one..is of resinoid nature... The other, termed bufotenin, is very soluble in both water and alcohol; it has a paralysing influence. 1936Jrnl. Biol. Chem. CXVI. 91 Bufotenine has been obtained from the secretions of Bufo bufo bufo (Bufo vulgaris) and Bufo viridis viridis. 1966New Scientist 25 Aug. 414/3 Bufotenine (5–HDMT) is the active hallucinogen in potions prepared from plants by witch-doctors in the West Indies. |
