[Skr., ‘one whose essence is perfect knowledge’, f. bodhi perfect knowledge (budh to know: see Buddha) + sattvá being, reality.]
One destined to become a Buddha; a Buddhist saint who, having only one birth to undergo before attaining Nirvana, consents to be reborn for the sake of suffering mankind; a superhuman being of infinite wisdom and compassion. Hence bodhiˈsattvahood, -ship, -ˈsatship, the state of a Bodhisattva.
