bacitracin Biochem.|bæsɪˈtreɪsɪn| [f. bacillus + Trac(y, the surname of Margaret Tracy, an American child in whom the substance was found in a wound: see -in1.] An antibiotic obtained from organisms of the group Bacillus subtilis.
1945B. A. Johnson et al. in Science 12 Oct. 376/1 We named this growth-antagonistic strain for the patient, ‘Tracy I’. When cell-free filtrates of broth cultures of this bacillus proved to possess strong antibiotic activity and to be non-toxic, further study seemed warranted. We have called this active principle ‘Bacitracin’. 1949H. W. Florey et al. Antibiotics I. x. 465 There seems to be little doubt that bacitracin is a valuable agent..especially as it is active against some pencillin-resistant organisms. 1960A. E. Bender Dict. Nutrition 13/2 Bacitracin,..of use in brewing to control infection. 1961Brit. Med.
