1. A black pigment found in the spores of various species of Aspergillus.
1891Jrnl. Chem. Soc. LX. 751 The spores of Aspergillus niger, when treated with very dilute ammonia, yield a dark-coloured solution from which a slight excess of hydro⁓chloric acid throws down aspergillin as a black, bulky, flocculent precipitate. 1949Florey et al. Antibiotics I. vii. 348 Since the name ‘aspergillin’ was originally proposed by Linossier (1891) for the black water-insoluble pigment of the spores of A[spergillus] niger, it would appear desirable to avoid applying it to other substances.
