[f. arsenic) + -ine, here used to form a term analogous to am-ine.]
A compound having the structure of ammonia or an amine, with arsenic instead of nitrogen; i.e. arseniuretted hydrogen (AsH3), and any derivative bearing the same relation to it that the amines do to ammonia (NH3); as trimethyl arsine (CH3)3As. Hence arsinic |ɑːˈsɪnɪk|, a., as in dimethylarsinic acid.
1876Encycl. Brit. V. 541/1 Arsine and stibine..are formed whenever hydrogen is evolved in presence of an arsenic or antimony compound. 1910Ibid. II. 652/1 Arsenic trihydride (arsine or arseniuretted hydrogen), AsH3, is formed by decomposing zinc arsenide with dilute sulphuric acid. Ibid., The arsines and arsine chlorides are liquids of overpowering smell, and..exert an extremely irritating action on the mucous membrane. 1922F. W.
