The name of a town on the island of Kyushu, south-west of Japan, used attrib. to designate a variety of porcelain made in the neighbourhood since the early seventeenth century, or an object made of this porcelain, usually characterized by an asymmetric style of decoration, commonly either cobalt blue and white underglaze or polychrome enamel.
