ankylosing spondylitis [tr. F. spondylite ankylosante (Auerbach 1900, in Gaz. hebd. de Méd. et de Chir. 7 June 538/1)], an inflammatory arthritis of the spine, chiefly affecting young males, characterized by inflammation and ossification of the intervertebral discs and ligaments, leading to ankylosis of the vertebral and sacro-iliac joints.
