†1. Ladenburg's name for a tertiary base containing an alcoholic group; also called alkamine. Obs.
1882Jrnl. Chem. Soc. XLII. 165 Alkines... Piper⁓propylalkine..dissolves in water with evolution of heat. 1886E. F. Smith tr. von Richter's Org. Chem. 264 Oxy-alkyl bases may be obtained from the allyl amines... The bases obtained from the secondary amines are alkamines or alkines. 1904Jrnl. Chem. Soc. LXXXVI. i. 685 Alkines combine with the haloids of organic alkyloxy- or acetooxy⁓acids... The products closely resemble the difficultly prepared, unsubstituted alkine esters in their physiological action.
2. Also ˈalkyne (now the usual form). Any member of the acetylene or ethyne series of hydrocarbons, with the general formula CnH2n{b1}2, containing a triple bond.
